Student Disciplines

Upholding the integrity and standards of the University of Peradeniya through fair and transparent disciplinary processes.

Overview of Student Discipline

The University of Peradeniya is committed to fostering a safe and respectful academic community. The disciplinary system is designed not just for enforcement, but as a constructive process that encourages restorative justice and personal growth.

The Proctorial System

The maintenance of student discipline within the university is traditionally carried out through the Proctorial System, consisting of Proctors and Marshals who work across all faculties.

University Proctor

Oversees the overall disciplinary framework and coordinates with Faculty Proctors to handle formal inquiries and student behavior.

University Marshals

Provide on-the-ground support, monitoring campus activities, and assisting in the immediate resolution of disciplinary matters.

University By-laws

All students are bound by the Student Unions (Amended) By-Laws and the Rules of Residence. These regulations ensure that every student can pursue their education without disruption.

Academic Integrity

Upholding standards against plagiarism, exam malpractice, and research misconduct.

Campus Harmony

Strict prohibitions against ragging, harassment, and any form of physical or verbal violence.

Disciplinary Procedures

When a disciplinary matter is reported, the university follows a structured procedure to ensure fairness:

  • 1

Inquiry Phase: A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Faculty Proctor or a designated committee.

  • 2

Formal Hearing: If evidence warrants, a formal disciplinary board hearing is held where the student can present their defense.

  • 3

Resolution: Decisions are made based on the severity of the offense, ranging from warnings to suspension or expulsion.

Rights of the Student

  • The right to a fair hearing and representation.
  • The right to appeal any disciplinary decision.
  • Access to counseling services throughout the process.
  • Confidentiality regarding disciplinary records.
